When the teeth becomes misaligned or crooked in appearance and are unable to fit properly, the situation is termed as Dental Malocclusions. Malocclusions can be of several types like overbite, crossbite or some other kinds of bite problem. On an average, 1 out of 5 Americans suffer from this kind of dental problem. In modern orthodontics, malocclusions has been classified in 3 broad categories or classes which are mentioned under the following headings:

  • Class I: In this the maximum number of teeth will be pretty much okay but a few of them will have some kind of spacing or eruption problems. Some of the teeth seem to be totally overcrowded.
  • Class II: In this, the upper jaw is way behind the lower jaw and there are 2 further sub-divisions in this class. In division 1, the anterior teeth will protrude while in division 2, the posterior teeth in upper jaws protrude.
  • Class III: This class is just the contrary of class II in which the upper jaw is way ahead in comparison to the lower jaw. It is said that this kind of dental problems is hereditary in nature.

Dental Malocclusions can occur with adults as well as children. In the case of children, it is said that excessive amount of thumb-sucking or using pacifier can lead to this kind of dental problem. However if this dental deformity occurs in adulthood, then the real reason behind this problem is its genetic characteristics as one might have inherited from ones parents.

As a matter of fact, it is not possible to prevent dental malocclusions but it is possible to cure them with the help of some kind of orthodontic treatments like wearing a set of braces for certain time span. However the cost of treatment is certainly high but it can be made affordable with the help of Orthodontic Insurance which can pay up to 50% of the treatment expenses so incurred.
