There are many people who believe that the orthodontic procedure and the dental procedure are the same thing. They never realize that there is a world of difference between both of them. Dental procedure is limited only up to the cleaning of the teeth, filling cavities etc. On the other hand, the orthodontic procedure comprises of braces treatment, canal implant, root implant, orthognathic surgery etc. There are many appliances and kits used by the orthodontists during the orthodontic procedures and treatments. Some of the common orthodontic appliances are mentioned under the following headings:
- Rapid Palatal Expander: This is a very common appliance used for the purpose of removing the overcrowding of the teeth and to make the jaws narrow. This kit is placed on the upper mouth roof and is then turned into a special key. Slowly and steadily it then tries to widen the upper jaws. As a result of which the smile is broadened and the crowded teeth are aligned in a proper manner. It is placed in the mouth of the patient for a time span of around 6 months by which the jaws comes to its proper place.
- Headgear: This is another very common orthodontic appliances used extensively in order to fix over jet jaws and for people who wish to put their teeth in position. It is placed on the upper jaw bands to hold it in place. As a result of which the jaw bone starts to grow in a popular direction. To get the best results, it is advised to get it done in the early age especially between 12-19 years of age. The sooner it is done, far better are the results.
- Thumb Guard: There are many children especially up to 10 years of age who have the problem of sucking their thumb. Due to this problem, it affects the growth of the upper teeth and can cause severe over jet problems. What a Thumb Guard does is that it is placed on the upper jaws and holds the jaws in position and does not allow pushing against the front teeth.
- Wilson: It is another common orthodontic appliance which works the same way like that of a Thumb Guard but it pushes back the molar teeth. This is specifically done on those people who are unable to receive the treatment of Headgear because either they are too old or fail to respond well. It is imperative to wear this appliance on a regular basis and change the bands to once in every week.
Apart from the list mentioned above, there are also many other common orthodontic appliances used extensively by the orthodontists to fix the crooked jaw, to put the teeth in proper place and to bring good smile to the people.
