Dealing with Broken Braces

There is no denying the fact that braces do help in making the misaligned teeth get straightened up but there are not many people especially children who are able to manage them. Kids getting braces has become a common scenario these days and is often termed as an inevitable rite before becoming an adult. The beauty of braces can only be appreciated once it is completely removed from your jaws and until then one has to bear the misery. Braces are no doubt painful and difficult to maintain especially for the children and often there comes a situation that the parents come across the situation of broken braces of their children.

Now the question arises as to how the braces got broken down. There could be a numerous reasons responsible for the same and one of them is loose brackets. Brackets do become loosened up when there is a wearing away of the bonds. If the brackets are re-bonded quickly by the orthodontists, then the brackets can be tightened up. Another reason that is responsible for broken braces is loose orthodontic appliances like bands, space maintainer, tooth expander etc. If these aforesaid appliances are re-cemented or replaced by the orthodontists, then the situation of broken braces can be averted.

To prevent oneself from the situation of broken braces, one would need to take care of certain precautions:

  • Avoid eating any stuffs that are hard, sticky or put a lot of pressure on your teeth or jaws like jelly beans, chewing gums, starburst etc.
  • Instead of using a normal tooth brush, use an electric one like proxabrush to clean the teeth.
  • Use Waterpik to floss the teeth instead of thread.
  • Do not put pens, pencils, paper clips etc to your mouth because it can certain cause a lot of problems.

At any point of times if the braces gets broken down, then one needs to visit their respective orthodontist as soon as possible who would fix the situation by getting the broken brackets or loose bands repaired. If the situation becomes worse, then it might be possible that your orthodontist would have to replace the wires or brackets with new ones. Parents are advised not to get their children wear braces right from a tender age because it is quite difficult for them to maintain and it might cause broken braces later on. Children should wear braces at least when they arrive in their teenage because at that time they would be able to take care of braces.
